Call on all health & safety representatives to create asbestos awareness at the workplace
Health & Safety is one of the key components to make any business a success. In the difficult times, we are facing, it become even more important to look after the workforce.
The new asbestos abatement regulations are part of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993 and it requires that every employer or self-employed person must inform all employees that asbestos is present. Regulation 4 - 7 (c) - Asbestos abatement Regulations. If asbestos is present it must be listed in an inventory of the workplace.
The asbestos inventory must consist of the following:
Date identified
Description of the material
Location of the material
Confirmation of labeling
Risk involved
Description of potential exposure
The asbestos inventory must be reviewed by a competent person at intervals not exceeding 24 months.
